Coming to Trailblazer Nation for the first time? Living #thedixielife and attending New Student Orientation isn't just about visiting our awesome campus. It's also about getting out into the surroundings of St. George that make Trailblazer Nation one of a kind.

To help make your first visit memorable, I’ve made a list of my go-to sights to see, experiences to have and, my personal favorite, places to eat!

Taking in the Sights

  1. Pioneer Park and the Red Hills Desert Garden: This park is home to the famous Dixie Rock. There are hiking trails, bouldering spots and a beautiful desert garden.
  2. Snow Canyon State Park: Only 15 minutes north of campus there are hikes for everyone. I love exploring at the lava tubes or hiking up to the white rock amphitheater.
  3. Zion National Park: This national park is a MUST see! The stunning vistas are well worth the one-hour drive.

[PRO TIP: Buy an annual national park pass. It can be used at all the national parks, many of which are close to St. George. Plus, it pays for itself in just two visits.]

Experiencing the City

  1. Shop on Main Street/Downtown: There are many boutiques, galleries and fun eateries. I love going to Judd’s and getting some old-fashioned candy or perusing the other shops for a special find.
  2. Farmers Market: I love fresh food and the Downtown Farmers Market at Ancestor Square is the perfect Saturday morning activity during the summer.
  3. Catch a show: The stage is my second home and thankfully St. George offers amazing community and regional theater from Tuacahn to Brigham’s Playhouse to St. George Musical Theater and more. You really can’t go wrong choosing a show to enjoy Friday night, after your orientation.

Get in My Belly

  1. Mad Pita: Their parmesan crusted fries are to die for! Stop here for great Mediterranean eats.
  2. Street Tacos: You can never go wrong with street tacos. I love El Coyote Charro, Angelica’s and La Cocina.
  3. Ancestor Square: Though this isn’t a specific eatery, three of my local faves are located in Ancestor Square. Benja’s for Thai food, the famous Pizza Factory and George’s Corner. George’s Corner even has live music!

If you’re traveling from out of town and need a place to stay, there are great hotels, motels and inns. Here is a list of hotels that love Dixie State University and have agreed to offer discounts for friends and family of current and future students.

Above all, enjoy your visit to Trailblazer Nation no matter where it takes you!
