SAYING YES IN JAPAN

By Jullianna Franco

Micah Morgan and Erik Hughes blazed a new trail when they became the first students of Dixie State University to represent DSU as global ambassadors of Mejio University exchange program in Japan.

During their 11 months in Nagoya, Japan, Micah and Erik developed a “Yes Man” mentality. With this new mentality in motion, both Micah and Erik were able to experience many unique adventures and broaden their knowledge of Japan’s unique and captivating culture.

This “Yes Man” mentality drove them to get out of their comfort zone, which eventually lead them to participate in and win a coding contest at Meijo University.

While in Japan, they observed how difficult English pronunciation was. With that inspiration on their mind, they and their friends developed an app to help Japanese students’ English pronunciation. Students can speak into the app and receive a grade on their pronunciation, and receive help by hearing a native English speaker pronouncing the words.

Winning the coding contest is just one example of how Micah and Erik were able to exemplify Dixie State’s “active learning. active life.” during their time in Japan.

DSU adventures in Japan doesn’t stop with Micah and Erik. DSU students are encouraged to apply for the Mejio University exchange program and experience their own adventures.

If you are interested in learning more about the Mejio University exchange program, Dixie State is hosting an Evening in Japan where students will be able to enjoy authentic Japanese cuisine, learn more about the program, hear from Micah and Erik, as well as engage in a Q&A session.

Evening in Japan is set to take place from 5:30-6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 25, in the Kenneth N. Gardner Student Center Conference Room B.
