MLK Weekend 2020 Celebration Event Overview

This Martin Luther King Day, the Dixie State University community is uniting to Dream. Believe. Do. in honor of the civil rights leader who lead the charge against racism, war, and poverty. In the spirit of his commitment to reconciliation and hope, we are following in his footsteps to promote equality and inclusion.

The weekend celebration will begin with the African Soul International Performance Group in the Dolores Dore´ Eccles Fine Arts Center from 7-9 p.m. This experience is free and open to the community.

ASI was established in 1998, by Sista Jewel, now Dr. Jewel, an artist who wanted to make a difference in her community. Through presentations, workshops, residencies, and performances, they have touched over 100,000 lives, empowering, educating and bringing the joy of African culture, history and music.

Join us for an evening to commemorate and to celebrate Dr. King and Drum Major Awards recipients from 5-7 p.m. in the Jeffrey R. Holland Centennial Commons Zion Room. Dinner will be served, entertainment will be provided, a special guest will give a keynote address and dancing will follow.

Dress code is business professional and tickets are required to attend. Free tickets for DSU students, faculty and staff are available in the DSU Campus Store. Tickets for the community can be purchased at the Ticket Office or online here. Tickets are $20 and proceeds will benefit student scholarships within DSU’s Multicultural & Inclusion Center.

 

Day of Service is your opportunity use a day off to support others in your community from 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. Meet at 9 a.m. in the Kenneth N. Gardner Student Center for breakfast, then depart to the service sites. We have five volunteer sites for you, your family (all ages) and your friends to choose from. Be sure to wear closed toe shoes and clothes you don’t mind getting dirty.

Later this month, we will celebrate diversity with our Miss Native Dixie. In its 25th year, the pageant will feature Dixie students sharing Native American talents, wearing traditional garb, and speaking their native languages in an educational evening of majestic storytelling and cultural celebration. The pageant will take place at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 29, in the Kenneth N. Gardner Student Center Ballroom and admission is free.
