One of Dixie State University’s very own faculty members Dr. Michele Poast, who teaches mathematics courses at the Hurricane Education Center (HEC), was named the 2019 Hurricane Valley Chamber of Commerce Educator of the Year!
Each year, dozens of educators, from all levels of education, are nominated for the Hurricane Valley Chamber of Commerce Educator of the Year award. Dr. Poast won in a landslide vote for her tremendous support of the Hurricane Valley and continued efforts with her students at the HEC.
“I’ve seen the impact Michele has on her students and how she contributes to the overall success of the Hurricane Education Center,” shared Chris Gifford, Director of the HEC. “To see her selected as Educator of the Year, from a list of more than a dozen educators throughout the Hurricane Valley, was so well deserved!”
Dr. Poast is driven in her work as an educator by her passion for working with students who frequently get lost in the world of mathematics. Creating a space where students are valued, respected and thrive is a focus of hers as she seeks to incorporate an accessible and relevant support system. Dr. Poast builds a physically and emotionally safe space for learning because she wholeheartedly believes active learning comes from active teaching and shame-free mathematics.
“The most rewarding experience for me is when I witness a student regain confidence in their use and understanding of numbers,” Dr. Poast said. “As their confidence increases, their anxiety and shame of past mathematical experiences begin to dissipate. They finally realize their academic and career aspirations are realistic and within reach!”
The students of Dixie State and the HEC are fortunate to have Dr. Poast.
“She is passionate about teaching a subject that so many are intimidated or frustrated by,” shared Chris.
