Happy National Doughnut Day, fellow Trailblazers! Did you know that National Doughnut Day started in 1938 as a fundraiser for Chicago’s Salvation Army? Their goal was to help those in need during the Great Depression and to honor The Salvation Army “Lassies” of World War I who served doughnuts to soldiers.
In honor of National Doughnut Day, I came up with three recipes to celebrate the Dixie way! These recipes are unique, from a spicy Sriracha doughnut waffle to a donut milkshake…These recipes are great for Trailblazers of all ages!
D-S-U Homemade Doughnuts
Ingredients:
Pillsbury biscuit dough
1-2 cups vegetable oil
3 cups powdered sugar
3 Tbsp light corn syrup
3-4 Tbsp milk
Red gel food coloring
Tools:
Letter cookie cutters
Instructions Part 1:
Take 3 biscuits and cut out your D-S-U letters.
Add 1 inch of oil in a pan and heat. To make sure it’s ready, put one drop of water in the pan. If it sizzles, it’s ready.
Carefully drop each biscuit (one at a time) into the oil.
Fry each letter for 30 seconds to a minute or until the bottom becomes brown, then flip and do the same thing on the other side.
After cooking, place doughnuts on a cooling rack and let them cool completely.
Instructions Part 2:
In a large bowl, combine powdered sugar, milk, light corn syrup, and whisk until smooth.
Place 3 drops of food coloring into the glaze.
Drag a toothpick through the food coloring and the glaze until it’s swirled/marbled.
Holding your cooled doughnut at the base, dip the surface of each doughnut into the glaze (add additional food coloring as needed to reach your desired look).
Classic 1911 Donut Milkshake
