Utah Tech University students participate in IRS Citizen Academy

By Jake Harber

Experiencing the day-to-day life of IRS criminal investigation agents firsthand, select Utah Tech University students recently had the opportunity to participate in a mock investigation through the IRS’s Citizen Academy.

Working with agents from the Phoenix Field Office, students started the day by being “sworn in” as criminal investigation agents and then were fully immersed in a simulation of the work of actual agents. Students were given a mock fraud referral and the chance to find probable cause in order to make an “arrest,” applying their forensic accounting skills and analyzing documents along the way.

Once the students received an arrest warrant from the judge, they made a mock arrest on the suspect.

The Citizen Academy is just one way Utah Tech University applies its “active. learning. active life.” approach to education to student learning. As a comprehensive polytechnic university, Utah Tech offers students hands-on learning experiences that prepare them to be career-ready.
