Utah Tech University held a graduation ceremony for the 11 students who graduated from Peace Officer Standards and Training Academy on August 17. Several of these graduates had prior career plans and will be serving full-time as Law Enforcement Officers.

Utah Tech’s POST Academy is a satellite academy that serves all of Southern Utah. Their main location is located in Sandy, but many officers come to Utah Tech’s program for the opportunities given by the academy.

“Upon graduation, 80-85% of our cadets are generally employed and graduated as working Law Enforcement Officers.”

Prior to the Law Enforcement Officer graduation, cadets went through two sections to become Law Enforcement Certified. First, they went through 14 weeks of Special Function Officer training learning Utah state law, ethics, conflict management and CPR certification, while practicing defensive tactics and engaging in physical fitness weekly. To graduate, they must pass three certification exams consisting of defense tactics, physical training and a written exam.

After completion, they then move into the Law Enforcement Officer Training. During this session, cadets engage in more hands-on training while still building on defensive tactics and physical fitness. They are tested and must pass certifications involving firearms, intoxication and standard field sobriety, traffic accident and radar/lidar. All of the certifications are needed along with another defensive tactics and physical fitness test and a final written comprehensive exam
