Utah Tech University’s Youth Swim Team Makes a Splash At Championship Meet

By Katie Walker

For the first time in over ten years, Utah Tech University saw its youth swim team take the championship title.

Utah Tech's "active learning. active life." motto propels its Campus Recreation Department to engage with and give back to its community. Throughout the summer, they host various student-led recreation campus for the community's youth, like rock climbing and sports camps.

The Utah Tech competitive youth swim team is held every year from May to July. During that time, they're coached by current Utah Tech students to build general endurance and learn the techniques of swimming. They train to improve a variety of styles of swimming, including freestyle, backstroke, butterfly and breaststroke.

The training doesn't stop there. The coaches work to build confidence and determination, as well as foster a culture that encourages sportsmanship, work ethic and effort and support for teammates. They strive to make this a positive experience for everyone involved.

The youth swim team allows for 200 kids aged 7-14 to compete in the Tri-State Recreational League. They compete against other teams in Hurricane, Kanab and Mesquite in various invitational meets. At the end of their competition season, they meet for the final championship.

At the final championship, the team and their coaches had to combine everything they learned that summer - strong work ethic, stroke technique, support for their team and love for the sport of swimming. With all their efforts combined, they were able to bring the championship title home to Utah Tech.

The team and coaches celebrated their hard-earned win with a jump in the pool. The staff said that they're grateful for this season and eagerly wait for next summer, with hopes they can keep the trophy in their very own Human Performance Center pool.
