Playing in a PGA tour event for most college golfers seems like a dream, but for freshmen David Liechty that dream became a reality.

Liechty is the first golfer in Utah Tech program history to play among the pros in a PGA tour event. Over the two days of competitive play, David tallied four birdies — a performance that speaks loud about his ability to play under pressure.

“It’s been my dream since like two years old, it’s what every college golfer dreams of doing” David said.

Earning His Spot Among the Pros

Head golf coach, Brad Sutterfield, explained how Liechty’s exemption was earned from his impressive record and growing reputation in amateur golf. Over the summer, he competed his way into the finals of the Utah State Amateur, proving he can keep up with elite competition.

“This experience will be invaluable for David,” Sutterfield said. “Competing alongside PGA Tour professionals will not only boost his confidence but also accelerate his development as a player. It’s an opportunity that will benefit him throughout his college career and beyond.”

Lessons From the Fairway

Liechty shot three birdies on his first day on the course and found more confidence on the green after committing to the shots and settling into his own game.

“Seeing how good the pros are is a motivator to go out and practice more,” Liechty said. “Billy Horschel told me ‘practice, practice, practice – two hours a day isn’t enough if you want to play at this level.’”

A Milestone for the Program

A PGA tour exemption is a significant milestone for both Liechty and the Utah Tech Men’s Golf. His success shines a spotlight on the program and sets new heights for future Trailblazers.

This experience boosts confidence and drive going into the rest of the season for Liechty and team, proving hard work can take you from the college fairway to one of golf’s biggest greens.
