Summer Writing Bridge Program improves writing skills

By Leslie Twitchell

During the summer semester, DSU’s English Department offers a fantastic opportunity to incoming students to improve their writing skills and  test into the English 1010 composition class. The Summer Writing Bridge Program allows those who have an English ACT score of 10-13 to improve their College Placement Test score (CPT). After a refresher regarding basic writing skills, students take the CPT test to see if they can test out of ENGL 1000 (a developmental course) and enroll in ENGL 1010. The bridge program consists of approximately 8 hours of preparatory, online coursework and a one-day on-campus training. The cost of the program is only $90 and participants receive two attempts at the CPT, 6 hours of classroom instruction, Canvas resources, overnight lodging, and breakfast, lunch, and dinner the day of the program. Susan Ertel is the 2018 Summer Writing Bridge instructor. She is an Associate Professor of English and specializes in developmental composition and grammar (and she’s a lot of fun!).
