By Jullianna Franco

Dixie State University’s Southern
Quill will host a Benefit Reading and Silent Auction featuring readings by
prose writer Dorothy Solomon and poet Tom C. Hunley as well as a live performance
by local musician, Austin Mariano.

The event is being held on Wednesday,
April 3 at 6:30 p.m. in DSU’s Zion Room (HCC 537) to raise money to fund Dixie
State University’s student-edited arts journal, the Southern Quill.  Admission is FREE and everyone is invited to
attend.

More than 75 items will be up for
auction at the event. The items will include snowmobile rentals, resort stays,
gift cards to local restaurants and businesses, merchandise, artwork, and much
more. Hunley and Solomon will also be reading from their original work.

“Our annual benefit brings together members of Dixie State University campus and the greater community for a culturally enriching experience with two writers whose work is both nationally and internationally known,” Dr. Cindy King, Dixie State assistant professor of creative writing and the Southern Quill faculty adviser, said. “The reading and silent auction will celebrate and support the Southern Quill.”

Soloman currently teaches in the
English department at Dixie State. She is the author of “In My Father’s House:
A Memoir of Polygamy” and “Daughter of the Saints”. Her articles have been
published in Good Housekeeping, Marie Claire, and Elle. Soloman has appeared on
“Oprah” and “Good Morning America”.

Hunley is a professor at Western
Kentucky University. His latest published poetry collections are “Here Lies”
and “The State that Springfield is In”. Hunley poems have been published in
Crazyhorse, Michigan Quarterly Review and New Orleans Review.

Mariano is the lead singer of NVM,
a progressive rock band from St. George. He will kick off the evening with an
acoustic set.
