Come to The Southern Quill Information Session

By Cindy King, Assistant Professor of English

Have you ever wondered how to become a published author? Are you interested gaining hands-on experience in editing and publishing? Find out at The Southern Quill, Dixie State University’s literary arts journal, Information Session.

Edited by students and faculty of Dixie State University, the journal was established in 1951 and has been in print for more than 60 years. The Southern Quill publishes original works of fiction, poetry, creative nonfiction, visual art, and photography created by residents of Utah and Clark County, Nevada. It also accepts creative work by young artists and writers who are ages 12-17. The journal sponsors the Annie Atkin Tanner Memorial Scholarship for the top three poetry submissions from DSU students. The Naythan M. Bell Fiction Award is given to DSU students submitting the top three stories.

The Southern Quill is seeking students to join our staff from all majors and those whose interests include visual art and graphic design, website development, social media, fundraising, event hosting and planning, publicity, public relations and business writing. We currently have positions that provide experience in all of these areas. We also need assistant editors and readers in all genres.

In addition to working on the journal, Southern Quill staff hosts an information table on-campus and at GeorgeFest. We also hold a Benefit Reading & Silent Auction to help generate funding for the journal as well as for Southern Quill t-shirts and swag. Our most rewarding event, however, is the issue Launch Party & Contributor Reading at the end of the spring semester.

Students may enroll in ENGL 2890, 3890, or 4890 from 1-3 credits for the spring semester. Or, DSU students can simply become volunteers.

Come meet the editors and faculty advisor on Thursday, November 14 from 5:00 – 6:00 pm in HCC 470. Learn about the journal, how to submit your work, and how you can join our team. Refreshments will be served. For more information about The Southern Quill, contact Dr. Cindy King at cindy.king@utahtech.edu, or go to www.thesouthernquill.com.
