DSU students receive scholarships from Utah’s recreation association

Three students from the Recreation and Sport Management (RSM) program were recently awarded the Susan S. Christiansen Endowed Scholarship from the Utah Recreation and Park Association (URPA). Jordyn Hymas, Courtney Kelshaw, and Heather Lacey each received a scholarship ranging from $500 to $1,000. The awardees received a certificate and check while being honored during the Health and Human Performance graduation banquet earlier in May.

The annual student scholarships are coordinated in partnership between the Utah Recreation and Park Association and Dixie State University. As an institutional member of the Utah Recreation and Park Association, the Recreation and Sport Management program is provided $2,000 for scholarships each year. The scholarship honors Susan Christiansen, a lifelong recreation professional and a strong advocate for education.

“This scholarship, I’ve been so kindly awarded, will help me achieve my dream of opening a swim lesson business with an emphasis on those with special needs” Jordyn said.

Recipients are selected from a panel of RSM instructors based upon academic achievement, initiative to gain experience in the recreation industry, effort to pursue professional development opportunities, and their involvement in the association. The scholarships are usually awarded during the state conference held in March. Because of COVID19, the state conference was cancelled, and students were awarded the scholarship on campus.

“I’m grateful for Dixie State and their amazing faculty that help encourage me to do my best and help find opportunities for that will help me succeed in the future” Heather said.

URPA is a strong advocate for student success and firmly believes students represent the future of the recreation profession. URPA provides $10,000 annually to graduate and undergraduate students across the state majoring in recreation and sport management programs. URPA has been committed to providing financial assistance to deserving students since the 1970’s.

The Recreation and Sport Management program prepares students for careers focused on fostering healthy lifestyles, effective management of organizations, and the social and economic development of communities through sport and leisure programs, products, and services. The major aligns with national standards with an emphasis on developing critical leaders in an ever-changing global industry.

“The RSM program and Dixie State University as a whole has given me so many great opportunities.” Courtney said. “In addition to the scholarship, I have met some of my best friends through the program, as well as amazing connections with professors and recreation professionals.”

Each of the recipient will be busy this summer as they continue to develop their skills and knowledge of the recreation and sport industry. Heather will be working for Dixie State’s Campus Recreation department and for Washington City Leisure Services. Jordyn will be working with Desert Color Resort within their activities and aquatics department and Courtney will be completing an internship with Real Salt Lake of Major League Soccer.

“It was evident that these students are committed to the recreation industry as they have invested significant energy in gaining the knowledge and experience to serve communities through leisure services. I believe they will be very successful.” Dr. Joseph Lovell, Associate Professor and Program Director of the Recreation and Sport Management program said.
