Utah Tech Pickleball Champions Connect with Guangdong Students

Our very own pickleball team recently took their outstanding talent to South China Agricultural University (SCAU). This fun trip combined camaraderie and a passion for pickleball and ended with new meaningful friendships.
Serving Up New Friendships
Fresh off their World Championship victory, Utah Tech’s pickleball team packed their paddles and headed to China for an unforgettable trip. Invited by the Chinese People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries, the team proudly represented the United States at the 2026 China–US Pickleball Friendship Event.
But this trip was about more than the game, it was about creating a lasting bond. Through friendly matches, cultural exchanges, and shared experiences, the event showcased how sports like pickleball can bring people together from across the world.
"I think diplomacy and friendship building events like this are incredibly important for our community and team because they allow student-athletes to connect with peers from different cultures through a shared passion,” Utah Tech pickleball coach Chloee Butterfield said. “While pickleball was the reason we came together, the relationships formed off the court were just as special as the chance to play and grow pickleball on a global scale.”
It’s More Than a Sport
If there’s one thing students learned on this trip, it’s that pickleball speaks a universal language. What started as a journey centered around a paddle and a plastic ball, quickly turned into something amazing: friendships, cultural exchange, and memories that will last longer than a pickleball match.
The relationships that were built during this trip have our athletes excited about what's next. The idea is that this becomes an annual Trailblazer tradition, giving future students the chance to experience the same mix of competition, cultural discovery, and personal growth.
In the end, this team has traveled miles upon miles to play pickleball, but they came home with something of more value: new friendships, new perspectives, and a vision for an international Trailblazer family that continues to grow.
